NCBD Picks for April 8, 2026: The Comics That Actually Matter

8 min reading time

New Comic Book Day gets noisy fast.

A lot of books hit the wall every Wednesday. Some are obvious. Some get pushed harder than they should. This week has a good mix: a Spider-Man issue with real story weight, a Firestorm launch that’s pretty good, a couple X-books that actually have a hook, and a few indie books worth a real look.

The Spider-Book That Matters This Week

The Amazing Spider-Man 26

This is the clearest Marvel story pick of the week.

Here we go, “Death Spiral Part Seven” and the stakes pretty obvious: Peter is the last hero standing against Torment, while MJ, Eddie, and Dylan are all in the line of fire, and Torment picks up a new ally. MJ as Venom still feels awkward, but this has been one of the better Spider-Man events we have had in a minute.

Why it stands out:

  • Real crossover relevance

  • Spider-Man, Venom, Carnage-adjacent pressure still sells

  • The kind of issue readers won’t want to skip mid-arc

Collector take:

If you’re already in on Death Spiral, this is not the issue to fall behind on.

Best DC Launch of the Week

The Fury of Firestorm 1

If you want the cleanest DC launch for NCBD, start here.

DC has been on a tear the last couple of years. I'm not just talking about the absolute line either. DC has done a great job with their core characters, and while Firestorm may be firmly on the "B" team, Jeff Lemire gives him a truly compelling edge and I can see this being one of the best titles this year.

Why it stands out:

  • Lemire brings all the elements of some of his darker work.

  • Better early reaction than most weekly launches get

  • Strong cover line-up

Collector take:

This is one of the books people will come back asking for if the word of mouth holds.

X-Book With a Real Hook

Uncanny X-Men Annual 1

This is more than “the annual this week.”

This Annual spins out of “The Dark Artery” in Uncanny X-Men and focuses on the Regulators, turn-of-the-century mutants tied to Haven House and Wolverine’s past. Sounds pretty fun and may have some longer reaching implications. Gail Simone writing it doesn’t hurt either.

Why it stands out:

  • Clear story hook

  • Wolverine connection gives it some extra pull

  • Better reason to care than most annuals get

Collector take:

If you’re on the X-line, this is the kind of one-shot that can matter more later than it looks on Wednesday.

Marvel Wildcard

Web of Venom 1

This one is a must have if you're already in the symbiote lane. If not, it's still a fun light-hearted read.

We have a major first appearance, and the return of the red-and-blue symbiote costume, with the obvious question being who’s wearing it this time. Also a Killer Juan Ferreyra cover.

That’s enough to put it on the board.

Why it stands out:

  • First appearance

  • Ties directly into a live Venom/Spider-Man lane

  • Strong cover selections

Collector take:

This is the kind of book people grab because they don’t want to miss the reveal.

Best DC Ongoing Pick

Absolute Green Lantern 13

This is the DC ongoing I’d keep an eye on this week.

This is one of my top reads for NCBD this week. Love what Ewing has been doing with this series. We also have some decent first appearances this issue as well.

Why it stands out:

  • The Absolute line has been one of DC’s more reliable weekly lanes

  • Several first (Absolute) appearances

  • A smart pick if you want one strong DC ongoing besides the launch book

Collector take:

This is not just a stay-current book, with these new reimagined characters, this is the type of book that builds back-issue demand builds later.

Indie Pick

Estuary: A Ghost Story 1

If you want one indie book on the board this week, this is a good place to start.

Estuary: A Ghost Story 1 is in my stack for the week, and the setup alone does a lot of the work: a ghost story from DB Andry and Tim Daniel with art by Maan House. Also a killer Vanesa R. Del Rey cover, which helps.

Cover Picks of the Week

Archie x Army of Darkness #3 — Robert Hack Jughead variant

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #17 — Mark Spears Variant

Web of Venom 1 — Juan Ferreyra Variant

Something Is Killing the Children 46 — Jenny Frison variant
