The Comics That Actually Matter This Week
Every New Comic Book Day has its own personality.
Some weeks are all about milestone issues or blockbuster superhero events. This week feels different. Original stories, horror, and creator-owned comics take center stage, proving once again that some of the most exciting books on the shelves aren't always wearing a cape.
That's one of the things I love most about this hobby. You can walk into your local comic shop looking for Batman or Spider-Man and leave with a brand-new series you've never heard of that ends up becoming one of your favorite reads of the year.
This week's pull list has a little bit of everything—post-apocalyptic heroes, giant monsters, psychological horror, fantasy, and some incredible variant covers.

Market Watch
Original Comics Continue to Build Momentum
One trend I've been watching throughout 2026 is the growing appetite for original ideas.
Licensed properties and superhero books will always anchor the industry, but readers continue to reward publishers willing to take creative risks. Image Comics remains one of the biggest beneficiaries of that trend, while horror continues to be one of the hottest genres in comics.
That's good news for collectors.
The books everyone talks about on Wednesday aren't always the books people are hunting six months later.
Bound 4 You Conviction Pick
Geiger #24
Few creator-owned books have maintained the momentum that Geiger has.
Geoff Johns and Gary Frank continue to build one of the strongest universes outside of Marvel and DC, and every issue feels like another piece of a much larger story.
Why I'd Recommend It
- One of the best ongoing creator-owned superhero books.
- Consistently excellent storytelling.
- A cornerstone title of the Ghost Machine universe.
Collector's Take
This isn't a book I buy because I'm expecting a key issue every month, but this week looks to have the potential to tie in parts of the Ghost Machine Universe which I believe will be a big deal in the future.
While this issues events pushes this book into my conviction pick for this week, This and many of the Ghost Machine titles are on the top of my stack because I don't want to miss where the story goes next!
Pick of the Week
The Horror of Godzilla #1
Godzilla has always been a force of nature.
Putting the King of the Monsters into a true horror setting feels like a natural evolution.
Instead of leaning into spectacle, this series appears poised to explore the fear and devastation that follows in Godzilla's wake. It's a fresh angle on one of pop culture's most enduring icons and exactly the kind of creative twist that gets my attention.

- A fresh horror-focused take on Godzilla.

Collector's Take
Licensed books have become much stronger over the past few years. Don't overlook them just because they aren't traditional superhero comics.
Sleeper Pick
Queen in Black #1
Ok I get it, how can a event book be a sleeper pick? Large print runs, tons of build-up and hype.. Typically they come and go and don't really move the dial. For every Secret Wars we get a dozen like Blood Hunt.
Now I'm not saying the QIB is going to be the next Secret Wars or even match the level of the King In Black event but it has a chance to surprise some folks.
Why I'd Recommend It
- New Event that may have some implications for the future.
- The symbiote mythos continues to be one of Marvel's strongest modern franchises.
- Original concepts are driving some of today's best comics.
Collector's Take
Sometimes the best book you buy all week is the one you least expect..
Spec Watch
Geiger #24
Five years from now, I think collectors will remember the Ghost Machine universe more than many of today's event comics.
Geiger has become one of the flagship titles of that universe, and it's exactly the type of ongoing series I love keeping in the collection.
I believe in this book so much I had to put it on the list twice!

- Consistent quality.
- Important part of the Ghost Machine universe.
Collector's Take
Great runs become far more meaningful than isolated key issues.
Indie Spotlight
Ascencia #35
By issue #35, a series isn't surviving on hype anymore.
It's surviving because readers keep coming back.
That's one of the reasons I wanted to spotlight Ascencia this week. Long-running independent books often fly under the radar, but they're frequently some of the most rewarding reads in comics.
Why I'd Recommend It
- Long-running independent success.
- Mature fantasy storytelling.
- A great reminder that not every great comic comes from the Big Two.
Collector's Take
Independent comics reward patience, and series like this prove that longevity still matters.
Long Box Pick
Justice League: Knight Vision Special #1
One-shots don't always get the attention they deserve, but they have a habit of surprising collectors.
With a brand-new concept centered around Knight Vision, this special has enough mystery surrounding it to earn a spot on this week's watch list.

A few years ago, many pull lists were dominated by Marvel and DC. Today, I'm seeing readers mix in horror books, creator-owned series, and independent titles more than ever.
That's healthy for the hobby.
The broader our reading habits become, the stronger comics become as a whole.
